The Forgotten Recovery Window: What to Do in the 30 Minutes After a Long Run
You cross the finish line of your long run, hands on knees, breathing hard. You’ve just put in 18 miles. You did the hard part. Now, most runners do one of two things: collapse on the couch or immediately jump in the shower before heading to brunch.
Both are understandable. Neither is optimal.
The 30 minutes that follow a long run are, metabolically speaking, one of the most valuable windows in your entire training week. Miss it, and you blunt the adaptation you just worked so hard to earn. Use it well, and you accelerate recovery, reduce next-day soreness, and come back stronger for your next session.
